WHAT IS COUNSELLING?
Counselling is a journey which will probably involve visiting unfamiliar and often emotional places. It has been said that “We have to feel worse in order to feel better”. In my contact with you I accompany you on your journey, through three stages:
a) awareness and exploration, b) understanding and c) change. I work by helping you to empower yourself and help you find solutions to whatever issues you may have.
WHO AM I
My name is Lawrence Capon and I am a BACP accredited qualified counsellor who is accountable under BACP (British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy) guidelines. I offer a confidential and safe place for people to talk about their concerns. As part of my practice I am required to attend regular supervision.
I work integratively, which means using a variety of techniques, and mainly humanistically, so I work with the person, not their diagnosis, nor condition. I am therefore LGBT Affirmative in my approach. I am aware of how people are stigmatised and marginalised so I am sensitive to these issues in my approach.
I work with individuals and couples.
MY EXPERIENCE
I have several years experience working with gay/bisexual men, I worked as a Gay Men’s Sexual Health Counsellor at PACE. I have also worked with LGBT people affected by drugs/alcohol, and I have several years experience of working with individuals/couples affected by HIV at The Terrence Higgins Trust in London. I have 2 years experience of couple counselling (same and opposite sex couples). I currently work for the NHS as an HIV counsellor in a community setting.
I use a series of short-term interventions, at times of crisis to empower the individual. The series of interventions may lead to medium or longer term working. I work confidentially, using my discretion. I work flexibly, but both within my professional clinical boundaries and the BACP Code of Ethics. I work with a diversity of ethnic clients.
MY SERVICES
I can offer emotional support in the following areas:-
Concerns about bereavement and loss, separation, low self-esteem, sexuality, ill-health, loneliness, isolation, depression, anxiety, addictions, suicidal thoughts, and relationships.
Concerns over HIV, sexual health, including risks of HIV transmission, relationships, unprotected sex, disclosure of HIV status, adherence to treatment, pregnancy, diagnosis, testing and treatments.
BACP CODE OF ETHICS
You may wish to look at the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy website www.bacp.co.uk This has a complaints procedure and a code of ethics to which I am bound.
COSTS
My fees are £40 (individuals) and £60 (couples) per session. The session is for 50 minutes. Where people are not working the fee is negotiable. There will be a charge of £20 for the initial consultation (individuals) or £40 (couples). Fees may be negotiated depending on exceptional personal circumstances, and these are payable one week in advance.
INITIAL CONSULTATION
The initial consultation is an opportunity for us to meet and to agree to work together, and to assess your situation and possibly the focus of the sessions.
